STD test

Gonorrhoea and chlamydia lab test
£39.99; testinprivate.co.uk

The sell: Both kits are simple to use and give incredibly accurate results. Simply put a urine sample in the tube provided and insert into the special packaging for immediate return to the laboratory. Results can be e-mailed/phoned or posted within three days of the test being received.

Patient says: Anyone who has been in a sexual relationship owes it to themselves to go and get tested. The test took away the embarrassment factor of bumping into someone you know at the clap clinic. The test was easy to do, all you needed was to pee in a tube and send it off for testing. Three weeks later you know if you are in the clear.

Doctor's orders: Many people find it difficult to go and talk to a doctor or nurse about sexually transmitted infections, so this provides a good alternative.

Fertility test

Fertility score male fertility test
£23.99; expresschemist.co.uk

The sell: An easy-to-use, highly accurate screening test for male fertility potential. It checks both sperm count and motility (the ability to move spontaneously and independently) on the whole sample of sperm. The man produces two samples over a seven to 10 day period and the results are available in minutes.

Patient says: Like every bloke, whether or not my little guys could run the course is always at the back of my mind. Luckily, they are all in working order.

Doctor's orders: This test is good for reassuring those who may be worried. But although it tells you the number of motile sperm you have, it can't tell you everything about how healthy your sperm are, what genetic disorders they might carry or how good they might be at fertilizing an egg.

Prostate test

Prostate test
£14.99; testinprivate.co.uk

The sell: An easy-to-use, visual blood test to detect abnormal levels of Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA). The level of PSA is measured in the blood sample. Elevated levels (greater than 4ng/ml) may be an important signal of possible prostate disease.

Patient says: This test was again easy to use and gave me a quick result for something that I probably wouldn't have otherwise bothered to get checked at the doctors.

Doctor's orders: A raised PSA level may be a sign of prostate cancer but more often it is caused by something less serious like an inflamed prostate or an enlargement of the prostate often found in ageing. Prolonged cycling can even raise your PSA. Two out of three men with a raised PSA have no cancer cells on biopsy, while one in three with prostate cancer have a normal PSA. But the good thing about this test is that it does make a man more aware of his prostate and the need to be vigilant  for symptoms.
